Announced today by the Hyatt Foundation, the 2011 Pritzker Prize for Architecture has been won by Portugese architect Eduardo Souto de Moura, 19 years after fellow Portugese architect Alvaro Siza. (Many additional links found below).  Souto de Moura has completed a vast array of projects, from individual residences to sports stadiums.

Here is a link to a gallery of images of work by Souto de Moura, found on Google.  And here are links to a couple articles covering the announcement of the award to Souto de Moura:

CHICAGO (Reuters) – Portuguese architect Eduardo Souto de Moura is the winner of this year’s $100000 (62469 pounds) Pritzker Prize for his designs that

Here is what the venerable Wikipedia has to say about the Pritzker Prize, and here, their entry for Souto de Moura.

Here is a link to the official site for the Pritzker Prize for Architecture.

More to follow tomorrow and in the following days, no doubt…

Architecture & Design – Diller Scofidio + Renfro Design for Los Angeles Broad Collection Art Museum

Posted by the editors on Friday, 27 August 2010

The parking lot next to the Frank Gehry designed Walt Disney Concert Hall will be the site for the upcoming Diller Scofidio + Renfro designed Broad Collection art museum

Christopher Hawthorne has written an interesting article entitled “Critic’s Notebook: Eli Broad and the Diller Scofidio + Renfro museum design” in the Los Angeles Times looking at the very recently approved Eli Broad art museum to be built in Los Angeles, just across the street from Frank Gehry’s Walt Disney Concert Hall.  Christopher Knight, also for the Los Angeles Times, has written an article entitled “Broad Collection building design is upside-down” looking at Diller Scofidio + Renfro’s design for the Broad Collection/Boston’s Institue of Contemporary Art and the error that the architects are about to repeat in Los Angeles.

Are art museums still about art?  Or have economic concerns now imposed the “culture mall” vision? One supposes that it means something when both articles appear in the “Entertainment” section of the newspaper…

And what do you think?

Brasilia, Oscar Niemeyer, and Others, 50 Years Later

Posted by the editors on Friday, 23 April 2010

Christopher Hawthorne, Architecture Critic for the Los Angeles Times has written an article entitled “Critic’s Notebook: Brasilia’s embrace of the future seems so quaint” which looks at the bold architectural vision of the future that was, and is, Brasilia.  Were we all so naive, 50 years ago?

L.A. Times Wrap-up of the Salone del Mobile 2010 in Milan

Posted by the editors on Friday, 23 April 2010

Franco Forci / For The Times

“If leather isn’t your thing, Inge Sempé’s sofa also comes in olive and a muted canary yellow. The seat can come with the cushion partially absent, leaving an exposed wood surface that serves as a built-in side table.”

Craig Nakano has written a short article entitled “Arrivederci, Milano: Final scenes from the furniture fair” in the Home & Garden section of the Los Angeles Times giving what could be called a “Left Coast” take on the Salon del Mobile 2010 in Milan.  Interesting, however you feel about the City of Angels or Philippe Starck.

Here’s a link to a photo gallery, slide show to some of us, entitled “Milan furniture fair 2010: The good, the bad and the puzzling” that accompanies Nakano’s article and is very much worth looking at…  Make sure to click the grey arrows as there are 38 photos in the gallery.
