Architecture: Frieze Art Fair NYC by SO-IL: “..a 450 metre-long snaking white tent designed by Brooklyn architects SO-IL..Located between Manhattan, Bronx and Queens on Randall’s Island, the structure comprised six rented rectangular tents connected with wedge-shaped corner sections..Strips of white tent fabric overhanging the two gabled ends were fanned out and fastened to the ground, creating partially sheltered entrances..” Interesting configuration using a modified prefabricated rental structure..

Architecture: One World Trade Center dominates the NYC Skyline: “..With the installation of a girder on the 100th floor, the One World Trade Center has become the tallest building in New York. Currently standing at 1,271 feet (387m) tall, the “Freedom Tower” has surpassed the 1,250 foot Empire State Building. Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, the One World Trade Center will become the tallest building in the US and the third tallest in the world upon completion..Construction began on the tower in April 2006. Once completed, the office tower will be slightly taller than its predecessor, rising up to 1,776 feet. However, as the case is with many skyscrapers, there has been much debate on whether or not the 408 foot-tall needle that tops the building should be counted towers the total building height. Without the inclusion of the needle, the building would measure at 1,368 feet – the same height as the World Trade Center’s original north tower..More than half of the 104 stories will be dedicated to office space. Restaurants, television broadcasting facilities and possibly more than one observation deck will be integrated throughout the building..Preserving the footprints of the original Twin Towers, two reflection pools of the 9/11 memorial can be found at the base of the “Freedom Tower”..One World Trade Center has already been rented out and is expected to be completed in 2013..”

Design: Exhibitions: ‘Born Out of Necessity” at MoMA – Mother of Invention, Cousin of Design, by Roberta Smith: “..Most of the designs here fall somewhere between life-and-death necessity and modern-living convenience, but the more pressing the need, the more intriguing they tend to be. Especially so are simple objects that help relieve pervasive life-thwarting conditions..Design has a history, but at its best it also is history, telling the story of human growth, social change and expanding capacity.”
According to MoMA: Born out of Necessity - Showcasing objects that adhere to the traditional view of design as a tool for problem-solving, Born out of Necessity offers close examination of the problems themselves—whether urgent, foreseen, or imagined. From objects that respond to pressing needs in developing countries to new solutions that are tailored to the urban environment, the exhibition examines how design intervenes across a range of experiences, including medical emergencies and natural disasters. Other objects demonstrate how products created to address specific challenges for people with disabilities can provide solutions that improve everyone’s life. Drawing on the narrative power of design, Born out of Necessityaddresses a host of complex cultural developments, such as the need to incorporate environmental responsibility in everyday life, our attempts to marry ancient religious beliefs with contemporary mores, and the desire to anticipate and prevent technological and ecological quagmires.” Through 28 January 2013, moma.org
