W House by IDIN Architects

Residential Architecture: W House by IDIN Architects: “..The design concept of W-House is derived from the requirement that the owner would like the house that expresses his character in terms of space and form. Therefore, the design subject was how to interpret the owner’s lifestyle and passion into architecture. The idea initiated by the owner’s favorite activity of traveling and kayaking. There was one picture of a boat sailing on the river that has inspired the designer. The river acts as a supporter for the boat. As a house, the function areas of living room, dining room, and service are supporters for the private areas of bedrooms. The bedrooms are like the boat which the river is supporting underneath for sailing. The idea was developed into the building orientation by maintaining the basic elements but completely reveal the story, functions and context..The building orientation was determined by wind and sun direction in which the house face in a North South direction to get wind and for viewing, and let the side faces to the sunlight from West. In addition, Kayak is a challenging and adventurous sport. The cantilever has designed on second floor to present challenging and adventuresome. The benefit of cantilever is for shading the void on ground floor and to imply that the kayak is floating. The top of the house was designed to be a roof deck hidden above the South bedroom, creating a rest area as well as for activities. In addition to the glass window, wooden shutter covering around the house helps to shade the light and create some privacy when needed..The materials and tone were selected by concerning the context. The color of skin coat concrete should go along with the surrounding. The ground level is black-grey to divide the boat from the river, the second floor and the ground. In addition, the site location is on the brown-red soil, the house is therefore should be limited coloring into three major colors which are uncoated concrete grey, black-grey and brown-red which the tone is matching the soil on the location..In conclusion, W-House is designed by considering the context in two dimensions of both the location and the owner. They are brought into the process of thinking and designing, happens into a form that responsive to the location as well as the owner’s passion..”  Extensive glazing, natural light; interesting form and inspiration..

* Residential Architecture: Elysium House by Richard Kirk Architect

Posted by the editors on Thursday, 14 June 2012

Residential Architecture: Elysium House by Richard Kirk Architect: “..The residence occupies the majority of the allowable building envelope and then provides a carved out two story volume in the centre to allow light and ventilation to all interior spaces..The carved interior volume provides an internal focus visually and functionally. The inside and outside are united by seamless transitions and the consistent use of a restrained palette of materials. Materials are generally timbers left to weather naturally, zinc, and self-finished oxide renders which will improve their appearance with time, allowing the houses to merge with the landscape with an overall desire for applied finishes to be kept to a minimum..the living spaces [are] treated as a field of connected spaces and rooms whilst the bedrooms on the next level are conceived as nests floating above..The building is largely opened on the short access to allow views out of site with the living level utilising sliding screens to opening the interior completely to the exterior. The long axis walls are largely solid and openings are finely screened with vertical timber to blend with the vertical cedar cladding to give the sense of taught solid volume folding over the long sides..”  Ample glazing, natural light, indoor/outdoor sensibility, cedar cladding, slatted wood shutters..

Residential Architecture: Rosalie Residence by Richard Kirk Architect: “..Rosalie House has a solid base that rises up as a 3-storey lightweight structure. The exterior is predominantly recycled Tallow wood weatherboard and pre-weathered zinc cladding – RKA’s interpretation of the timber and tin tradition that is prevalent in the area..Sun-shading and privacy is achieved with operable timber screens and external venetian blinds that sit in front of a bespoke timber window joinery. The planning of the house is organised to address the views towards the city on the North-East and Mt Coot-tha on the South-West. The resulting building footprint provides private courtyards and landscaped terraces adjacent to the main living spaces..The interior is an ensemble of Red Mahogany timber flooring and Jarrah timber panelling on backdrop of white plaster walls and white-set ceilings. Environmental features of the house include solar hot water, 40,000L in-ground rainwater storage for landscape irrigation and low energy lighting..”  Contextual sensibility, extensive glazing, views and natural light; indoor/outdoor and materials sensibility,  interesting interior volumes, sustainability, solar energy..lovely wood flooring..rather wonderful..

* Residential Architecture: House 13 by Atria Arquitetos

Residential Architecture: House 13 by Atria Arquitetos: “..a family residence that points out the contrast among the simplicity of the shapes and the richness of the spaces and materials. The architectural design approach searches for privacy to the intimate areas of the house, as well as full integration of internal social areas, leisure spaces in the outside and the garden itself. The building has a steel concrete structure, two stories, and is located in a residential neighborhood in Brasília. The ground floor has differences in level that accommodate the house to the terrain’s natural slope..The main access is through the side of the house, by an enormous wooden pivoting door that leads to the core of the house, a double height space naturally lightened by a pergola with glazed roof. This space stands out for its monumentality and for the contrast of rough materials (cement floor)and noble materials (travertine marble panel)..”  Extensive glazing, natural light, skylights, wooden slat shutters, privacy, indoor/outdoor and materials sensibility..
