In Protest, the Power of Place by Michael Kimmelman – Place as Place & the Architecture of Social Consciousness

Posted by the editors on Sunday, 6 November 2011

The architecture critic for The New York Times, Michael Kimmelman, has written an interesting article entitled “In Protest, the Power of Place” in the Opinion Pages of The New York Times Sunday Review, looking at, through the example of Zucotti Park in New York City, and the Occupy Wall Street protest (as well as Tahrir Square in Egypt, Hyde Park in London, and others), among other things, the idea and importance of place in the creation, development and the very nature of social protest and the degradation, in the U.S., of the reality of “public space”.

The article includes a number of powerful, even iconic photos, from Kent State, Tiananmen Square, the Berlin Wall, and other “places” of social protest around the world.
