House in Monasterios by Ramon Esteve

Residential Architecture: House in Monasterios by Ramon Esteve: “..The house is located in an elevated area, from which it dominates a hillside leading down to the sea. This view marks the direction the walls will take and, in an abstract form, define the project. The house is structured as a compaction of volumes of varying heights, and the form established by the main walls..The articulating space volume of this sequence is obtained from opening courts and patios in the central space of the house. A series of open courtyards are formed, covered in its perimeter like an atrium, in search of the access to the house, obtaining different perceptions of the house..The views from any point intersect and are never interrupted along the permeable sequence at the end of which, limited between glass membranes, is the lobby. Thus, it creates an approach path that exposes the more intimate side of the house so that, once inside, you discover the long views over the hillside to the sea..Among the great defining walls, the space is closed with large glass panels protected with wooden movable planes, graduating the closing level of each piece..The housing program is focused very clearly in the direction marked by the walls, and volumes depend on the spatial hierarchy of spaces. Two wooden emerging volumes, materialized by the chimneys, mark the counterpoint to the horizontality that defines the entire house..”  Extensive glazing, natural light, views; interesting fenestration, interior details and materiality..

Caxinas House by AUZprojekt

Residential Architecture: Caxinas House by AUZprojekt: “..portuguese practice AUZprojekt has just shared with us images of their newest renovation in the small fishing town of vila do conde, Portugal, in a very dense urban context. the narrow rectangular plot contains an internal courtyard towards the back end and dictates the type and use of vertical circulation so as not to intrude excessively in the limited width available. a wing along the back side of the main volume extends the living areas that open to the private patio and creates another terrace on its rooftop..”  Interesting interior volumes and details..

Waiatarua House by Hamish Monk Architecture

Residential Architecture: Waiatarua House by Hamish Monk Architecture: “..The brief was for a new house on a challenging, steep site in the Orakei creek gully, Auckland, New Zealand. One of the design challenges was to insert a bold (in size and placement) intervention into a sensitive bush reserve whilst still maintaining a sense of modesty and poetic. The desire was to seek out a quiet architectural expression, one that is devoid of excessive articulation and noise; a silent witness to its surroundings..Conceived as sculptural components the design plays on purity and scale of the program articulated through three simple elemental forms that step down the site towards the creek – the roof of one floor creating a level platform for the next..From the point of entry the house offers a range of spatial experiences across the width of the floorplate; transitioning from a hunkered almost subterranean position in the landscape to an elevated position perched in the tree canopy..”  Extensive glazing, natural light, views..

Tind Prefab Houses by Claesson Koivisto Rune

Residential Architecture: Tind Prefab Houses by Claesson Koivisto Rune: “..stockholm, sweden-based studio claesson koivisto rune have teamed up with manufacturers at fiskarhedenvillan to design a series of pre-fabricated houses with a distinctly scandinavian aesthetic. the ‘tind’ residences draw their name from the norwegian word for ‘mountain peak’, a conceptual underpinning informed by the remarkable lack of sharp pointed peaks in scandinavian mountain systems. the softened edges of the range, shaved during the last major ice age, lend the landscape a particular beauty that finds its way into the architecture in the form of a truncated, single pitch roof. floor-grazing windows are relegated to major walls and all apertures lie flush with light-drenched interiors. rather than a perforated volume, the home is a rhythmic composition of built material and void, seamlessly delineated by beveled niches that also disguise the building’s joists. roof and wall are sharply divided and every vertex is clearly expressed by material changes. despite the various models of kit houses, every interior is organized by a central entrance way or staircase and seeks to blur notions of interior and exterior. while prefabricated homes have many historical iterations, the architectural integrity of the ‘tind’ series is preserved through culturally relevant approaches to living. the three dwelling designs will be officially launched this week in oslo and stockholm and will later be presented along with ceramic manufacturer globo during milan design week 2013..”  Extensive glazing, natural light, views..
