Green Box by act_romegialli

Residential Architecture: Green Box by act_romegialli: “..This glazed garden hideaway in Italy by Italian studio act_romegialli is disguised inside a dense thicket of bushy plants and blossoming wildflowers..The little building previously functioned as a garage for a weekend retreat in the Raethian Alps, but act_romegialli was asked to convert it into a space where the owner can keep gardening tools, prepare meals and entertain guests..Retaining the rustic stone walls and columns of the old garage, the architects installed a galvanised metal framework with a skeletal pitched roof, then added glazed panels to infill openings on each of the walls..Steel wires strung up around the structure help a selection of deciduous plants to climb over the facade, plus a mixture of annual and perennial shrubs are planted around its base, providing a constant blanket of exterior greenery..The interior of the building is divided into two rooms, both with weather-beaten larch floors and exposed concrete ceilings. The kitchen is constructed from galvanised steel and features a sink with metal pipes for taps..”  Extensive glazing, natural light, garden views; lovely garden pavilion; original article features a five-image slideshow and many additional images..

Posted by the editors on Thursday, 4 October 2012

Residential Architecture: Twisted House by JVA: “..High in the mountains, 1000m above the ocean (ndlr: normally referred to as “sea level”) and close to the ski slopes, the cabin reflects the contours in the terrain to make room for a large family on holiday..The cabin has seven floor levels connected differently to the surrounding terrain. These levels give various internal and external views..The facades and roof are clad in larch wood, and the whole interior is mainly in oak wood to give a warm feeling in the wintertime..”  Interesting form, interior volumes; extensive glazing, natural light, nature views; extensive use of wood: horizontal exterior wood cladding in larch, interior wood ( oak ) ceilings, flooring, walls; contextual sensibility..

* Residential Architecture: Low Energy House MZ by Calderon-Folch-Sarsanedas Arquitectes

Posted by the editors on Monday, 17 September 2012

Residential Architecture: Low Energy House MZ by Calderon-Folch-Sarsanedas Arquitectes: “..spanish practice calderon-folch-sarsanedas arquitectes refurbished a 94 square-meter house built in 1918 in only 120 days, to improve its energetic and acoustic comfort. the ‘low energy house MZ’ posed three challenging parameters: it’s northeast orientation, a small budget, and the client’s need to inhabit the dwelling as soon as possible. the components of the house are prefabricated, saving money and allowing the main timber structure, facade and roof to be assembled in only a few days using a numbering system like a toy set..the biggest changes made to the existing structure are the centrally located skylight and large sliding door connecting to the long garden. the openings provide solar gain in the winter and natural ventilation in the summer, as well as illuminate the primary space and reduce the need for artificial lighting. the walls, made from structural timber frame oriented-strand-board (OSB) panels are insulated with natural sheep wool and wood fiber boards, and integrate a dual flow ventilation system with 88% heat recovery. natural larch planks constitute the facade, while heat treated pine makes up the roof and three-ply panels compose the interior cupboards. the overall result is a ten-factor rehabilitation, lowering the residence’s energy need from 171 kwh/m2 to 17 khw/m2..”  Interesting interior volumes; indoor / outdoor sensibility; low energy renovation..
