* Residential Architecture: Bridging Home by Do Ho Suh

Posted by the editors on Thursday, 31 May 2012

Residential Architecture: Bridging Home by Do Ho Suh: “..an outdoor mixed-media installation built between two structures. the small house is built on an angle, seeming to hover several feet above the ground between two taller buildings. the perched piece has an unsettling affect, highlighting the tension existent between stranger-neighbors in larger cities, alluding to the dual sense of belonging and anonymity of an individual hailing from this place. ‘bridging home’ also explores the affect of living in an interconnected world upon the psychology of the individual and the community..”  True, it’s not a real residence…however..

Posted by the editors on Wednesday, 9 May 2012

Architecture: Marina Abramović Institute by OMA: “..Architects OMA have unveiled plans to convert a former theatre in Upstate New York into a performance institute commissioned by Serbian artist Marina Abramovic..The Marina Abramović Institute for the Preservation of Performance Art is to be located in Hudson and will operate as both a performance venue and an archive hosting workshops and lectures..The institute will be housed in a former theatre, which later became an indoor tennis court, then an antiques warehouse and market before falling into disrepair..OMA’s design will enhance the existing structure to accommodate both the research and production of performance art. As a venue specifically created for long duration performances, OMA will also develop new types of furniture, lighting and other elements to facilitate the viewing of such works.”  Abramovic is amazing and intense, and OMA is dynamic..

Posted by the editors on Friday, 27 April 2012

Residential Architecture: Villa Mirror Mongayt by Bernaskoni: “..the south facade consists of an art installation in a form of a temporary structure to allow the skin to be changed and transformed every several years. the mirror pixels reflect the sky and forest, dissolving the house into the environment. using metal wall brackets the sheets are hung away from the external wall..the 270 square meter structure was built in two phases using a prefabricated wooden frame. the 180 square meter ground floor used a universal screw-pile foundation allowing the building to be erected without requiring a geological survey, then the two independent 90 square meter units above. the interior of the dwelling made up of an enfilade of rooms which consists of three functions; a public space to the west where the kitchen located, a communal area situated in the middle with a double-height living room and private bedrooms to the east..”  Flexible, art-oriented facade, interesting interior spaces, prefab frame..
