Residential Architecture: Potasze House by Neostudio Architekci: “..Polish firm Neostudio Architekci have added a timber-clad extension to this farm building in Poland to create a residence..Potasze House was originally used by an agricultural university for seed drying and sits in woodland on the outskirts of Poznan..The single-storey extension accommodates a kitchen, living and dining space, while the existing building was refurbished to house a garage on the ground floor and bedrooms on the first floor..The existing building has been rendered and whitewashed to contrast with the extension..”  Interesting contemporary, wood clad extension to an existing, refurbished farm building; interesting interior volumes; ample glazing, natural light; disastrous interior decoration..

* Residential Architecture: Eden House by The Practice of Everyday Design

Posted by the editors on Sunday, 5 August 2012

Residential Architecture: Eden House by The Practice of Everyday Design: “..A chunky bay window protrudes from this timber-clad addition to a house in Ontario, Canada by Canadian studio The Practice of Everyday Design..The studio collaborated with architect Melanie Moore to replace the building’s existing upper floor bedroom with another that provides more space..The timber cladding and black window trim contrast with the dark brick and white frames of the original bungalow..Accessed by a staircase hidden behind doors in the dining room, the annex is kept private and separate from the rest of the house..Screens surround a dressing area on one side of the large bedroom, while the gabled rear wall is covered with shelving..The bathroom is organised to create privacy, with a sink exposed to the bedroom, a bath that faces only the dressing area and a toilet that is completely concealed..The low pitch of the roof increases head height in the space and blue handrails and taps add splashes of colour..”  Interesting geometry, materiality, fenestration..

* Residential Architecture: Villa SK by Atelier Thomas Pucher

Posted by the editors on Thursday, 2 August 2012

Residential Architecture: Villa SK by Atelier Thomas Pucher: “..on a small budget, austrian firm atelier thomas pucher was able to completely transform the ‘villa SK’ for the owners by merely adding an extra component. the unmodified existing house now serves the private functions, bedrooms and bathrooms. two horizontal planes of red-colored concrete extend the entrance of the original aged structure almost to the end of the property line. full-height glass panes envelope the new living room with knotted hardwood flooring, ultimately making the surrounding yard and climate conditions the real enclosure of the space..two massive beams with thin metal braces run along the top of the canopy and rest on a natural stone wall at the far end, allowing for a flexible open interior with only a few slender supports. the large members also double as the walls of the exterior second-level terrace accessible through the old residence. a seemingly floating interior brick partition with protruding angled units that act as shelves serve as a backdrop for various activities. the roof element contains a large void embracing the growth of a tree in a peaceful grass courtyard..”  Very interesting contemporary addition / extension to an existing home; expansive glazing, natural light; terrace; materials sensibility..

* Residential Architecture: Nettleton 198 House by Stefan Antoni Olmesdahl Truen Architects (SAOTA)

Posted by the editors on Wednesday, 1 August 2012

Residential Architecture: Nettleton 198 House by Stefan Antoni Olmesdahl Truen Architects (SAOTA): “..Stefan Antoni Olmesdahl Truen Architects (SAOTA) have completed the Nettleton 198 house in Clifton, Cape Town, South Africa..The clients, a British couple living in Cape Town, requested a six-bedroom, seven-level home that makes the most of the site, the views and the mountain. The lower levels of the existing structure were totally remodeled while the upper level was demolished to allow for two new levels..“Inspiration was drawn from the mountain and dark colours were used on the facade, allowing the building to visually recede into the mountain instead of being an obtrusive construction,” says Greg Truen, Project Partner. The site enjoys spectacular views, both of the sea and Lions Head and these views and the impact of the sun were key informants contributing to the overall design..The sun being both a defining and also harsh influence on the property inspired the choice of screens, shutters and louvres that give the lower levels its distinctive gravitas. The living room can open up onto the west and the east completely, giving it the feeling of an open pavilion..The finishes and detailing have been very carefully considered to achieve an integrated and visually effortless whole. The exterior of the building is clad in powder-coated aluminium which resulted in a very robust and precise surface finish. Internally, a much warmer look was achieved by using walnut timber. Black marble & glass were integrated into the design as accents..The home is peppered with unusual design ‘delights’. The circular entrance area, clad in walnut timber, is one of the main features of the house. The space is amplified by a fascinating lighting installation of backlit slumped glass, that renders an “other-worldly” effect. An elegant floating timber staircase employs hanging stainless steel rods for a refreshing take on a balustrade. Others include the walnut-clad kitchen box, the granite-clad rim-flow pool and the sculptural cantilevered carbon fibre bar..The clients wished to keep the interior as lean and focused as possible and the selection of furniture and lighting is both graphic and strong..”  Extensive glazing, natural light, views; indoor / outdoor sensibility; strong sense of materials; interesting volumes and details; stylish and luxurious..
