Crescent House by Andrew Burns Architect

Architecture: Crescent House by Andrew Burns Architect: “..‘Crescent House’ is the first in an annual series of temporary pavilions to be installed at Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation in Paddington, Sydney, Australia. The aim of this ‘Fugitive Structures’ program is to engage a wide audience with architectural thought..Two arcs are set within an apparently simple rectilinear form. The arcs bisect, creating a pair of infinitely sharp points and a threshold to the space beyond. This combination of fragility and robustness seeks to charge the conversations within the space with a particular quality..The structure has an ambiguous presence; between architecture and art object. Through framing, it transforms an ordinary rose apple hedge into a landscape of beauty. The pavilion responds to elemental themes; darkness and light, the wonder offered by the night sky and the burnt quality of yaki-sugi (charred cedar) recalling the presence of bushfires on this continent..The pavilion and has been initiated and supported by Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation, BVN Donovan Hill, Andrew Cameron Family Foundation and the Nelson Meers Foundation..”

* Residential Architecture: Shelter Island House by Stamberg Aferiat + Associates

Shelter Island House by Stamberg Aferiat + Associates

Residential Architecture: Shelter Island House by Stamberg Aferiat + Associates: “..Architects Stamberg Aferiat + Associates have designed the Shelter Island House in New York, USA..Let the line that divides art from architecture be transparent. This project gave us an opportunity to bring our influences, inspirations, aspirations and years of architectural design to bear in one place with only ourselves and our budget to define the boundaries..Cubists looked beyond the mechanical view of how the eye sees and employed the brain’s ability to remember and anticipate, allowing one to take in a seemingly disjointed array of phenomena but still have the whole make sense. The increasing plasticity of lightweight building materials allows us some of the Cubists’ slight-of-hand to simultaneously evoke the immediacies of built form as well as architectural dream states – the hovering roof, translucencies between inside and outside, and walls that are not walls..Practice what you preach: Architecture coupled with color can bring joy while providing the basic necessities. Building our own house gave us the leeway to be as bold with our color choices as the work would allow and to push boundaries that few dare, but our choices were always based in serious color theory..Sir Isaac Newton observed the different behavior of color created with pigment and color created with light. The Impressionists and Fauves experimented with Newtonian principles to create light effects with pigment. These experiments have redefined thoughts on how colors relate to one another. Guided by Newtonian color theory, the intense palette of the house allows richly-colored reflected light to pass through translucent walls, suffusing spaces with a delighting glow..”  Extensive glazing, natural light; interesting fenestration, form, interior volumes; exuberant color..

* Residential Architecture: D Gallery & House by Point B Design

Residential Architecture: D Gallery & House by Point B Design: “..a pre-fabricated gallery for a private art collection, a residential renovation, pool house, and encompassing grounds. a series of weathered steel frames placed at regular intervals rest upon a thick concrete anchor spanning the length of the gallery. clad with a bright red mosaic of panels, the upper level is comprised of a metal construction that cantilevers on three wide flange beams attached to a similar substructure..lining the presentation area is a custom designed wire mesh that provides a functional flexibility when displaying the varying art pieces. large glass panes, secured by structural steel mullions, enclose the gallery space and allow the landscape to become part of the spatial experience. the irregular sawtooth design of the roof and the contrasting rigidity of the first floor creates a constant shift in perspective throughout the program. much detail was taken into consideration on a multitude of scales from the overall formal diagram to the detailing of the door handles and stair railing connections..”  Distinctive form, cantilever, ample glazing, interesting interior volumes and details..

* Design: Design Observer: Accidental Mysteries by John Foster: Street Posters

Design: Design Observer: Accidental Mysteries by John Foster: Street Posters: “..Street posters, the kind of flotsam that exists near busy street corners, on light poles, walls — anywhere and everywhere in cities large and small, are easily overlooked unless you slow down and take an interest. Lost pets, a desire to meet others, save souls, anger and mental illness are found in these handmade signs..These street signs were found on UbuWeb, a large web-based educational resource for avant-garde material, founded in 1996 by poet Kenneth Goldsmith. It offers visual, concrete and sound poetry, expanding to include film and sound art mp3 archives..  John Foster and his wife, Teenuh, have been longtime collectors of self-taught art and vernacular photography..”  Marvelous.  Inspiring.  Didn’t you create all of these?..
