Residential Architecture: Toblerone House by Marcio Kogan – Studio mk27: “..brazilian practice studio mk27 has completed the ‘toblerone house‘ in sao paulo, brazil. three expansive horizontal concrete planes sandwich the simple juxtoposition of two contrasting spaces. upstairs, the ‘house on pilotis‘, a wood box deep within the roof footprint is wrapped in retractable screens of slender wooden slats which serve as a backdrop for the vegetation’s shadows during the day, while illuminating at night to give hints as to the activity inside. the lower level is comprised of two rows of 14 slender steel columns running longitudinally to maximize unobstructed exposure to the outside through the fully functional glass walls. public spaces are organized within this transparent soft-storey surrounded by the natural outdoor garden. the living room extends beyond the vitreous envelope to an exterior veranda and patio with fireplace and a circular void in the ceiling embracing two trees..” Truly lovely. Wonderful materiality, transparency, indoor /outdoor sensibility; excellent interior decoration..

Residential Architecture: Terra Nova House by Isay Weinfeld: “..Terra Nova House was built in a 730sqm plot in leafy Jardins neighborhood, in Sao Paulo, Brazil..The combination of three main factors – the size and shape of the plot (trapezoid-like, it is narrow at the front and wider at the back), the building code and the client’s program -, led us to organize the house around 4 levels, and to set the house at the foremost part of the terrain, leaving space for a gym room, a swimming pool and a small garden at the back..From the street, one approaches the house across the front garden directly to the living areas – dining and sitting rooms -, which through large, full-width, full-height sliding doors open up onto the garden, allowing for broad integration between indoor and outdoor spaces, as also broad natural light and ventilation, helping to keep temperature cool and pleasant green views whichever way one looks at..This integration can also be seen and felt in both the dining room and the kitchen, where adjacent decked terraces set in extension allow for this laid-back family to enjoy relaxed everyday meals. The first and second floors hold the private quarters of the house – three bedrooms and a family room -, while the basement floor take in the garage, the mechanical room, the laundry, a storage and the employees’ quarters, these facing a small indoor garden. A swimming pool is set at the back garden, just next to the gym room..” Privacy, extensive glazing, natural light, garden views; interesting materiality: glass, wood, concrete, stone..

Residential Architecture: Brasilia House by Isay Weinfeld: “..Brasilia house is located in Brazil’s capital, and is named after that city. Built on a 4,110 m2 lot on the banks of Lake Paranoá, the house was placed close to the street, leaving a large garden in the back. It is essentially organized into two levels – ground floor (entertaining and service areas) and first floor (bedrooms). On the ground floor, the social areas feature double-height ceilings, and the service areas, regular-height, making space to “fit” in an intermediate level to house the servants’ quarters..The region’s climate conditions (high temperatures and low relative humidity), played a key role in deciding for a great integration between the indoors and the outdoors, and for the creation of several outdoors areas for interaction – in the open or shaded – such as the inner court, the terrace next to the living room, the long raised deck leading to the lake, and also a meal area fitted with a firewood stove and a barbecue grill..Likewise, the bedrooms open entirely onto a long common balcony, overlooking the garden and the lake..” Cantilever, extensive glazing, abundant natural light, views; interesting materiality, interior volumes and interior decoration; indoor / outdoor sensibility..
