* Residential Architecture: Twisted House by JVA

Posted by the editors on Thursday, 4 October 2012

Residential Architecture: Twisted House by JVA: “..High in the mountains, 1000m above the ocean (ndlr: normally referred to as “sea level”) and close to the ski slopes, the cabin reflects the contours in the terrain to make room for a large family on holiday..The cabin has seven floor levels connected differently to the surrounding terrain. These levels give various internal and external views..The facades and roof are clad in larch wood, and the whole interior is mainly in oak wood to give a warm feeling in the wintertime..”  Interesting form, interior volumes; extensive glazing, natural light, nature views; extensive use of wood: horizontal exterior wood cladding in larch, interior wood ( oak ) ceilings, flooring, walls; contextual sensibility..

Residential Architecture: Boxhome by Rintala Eggertsson Architects: “..Boxhome is a small, residential project in Oslo by Norwegian architects Rintala Eggertsson..The 19 square metre dwelling is described by the architects as being “a peaceful small home, a kind of urban cave”..It is constructed using a timber frame and is clad in aluminium. Internally, a different species of wood was chosen for each room..wood: pine / structures; cypress / interior walls and floors; birch / kitchen; spruce / bathroom; red oak / living room; nut/ bedroom..”  Unusual, intriguing; materials sensibility..

* Residential Architecture: Summerhouse Inside Out Havaler by Reiulf Ramstad Architects

Posted by the editors on Saturday, 25 August 2012

Residential Architecture: Summerhouse Inside Out Havaler by Reiulf Ramstad Architects: “..The construction lies on top of a hill overlooking the ocean and the horizon. It is placed in the midst of an uncultivated landscape on a small island. The design of the house allows close interaction with the surrounding nature and the beautiful scenery. It engenders a feeling of being outdoors when inside. The use of glass facades and windows allow nature to enter the house from all angles and one can follow the sun as it rises and sets..The small scale of the building, together with the use of wooden materials that will gradually develop a grey patina, allows the project to interact and fit in with the existing shape and natural colours of the surrounding landscape..”  Extensive glazing, abundant natural light, lovely nature views;  wood cladding..

* Residential Architecture: Sauna by Formløs Architecture

Posted by the editors on Tuesday, 14 August 2012

Residential Architecture: Sauna by Formløs Architecture: “..Sitting on the brink of a waterfall near  farm in central Norway, the sauna, designed byFormløs Architecture, is simple and sculptural. As if cut from one piece of wood, the sauna hovers one foot above the ground and stretches out over the water..Surrounded by dense forest you only hear the water flowing in the river and the occasional strike of the axe as bathers chop more firewood for the wooden stove. The site itself and the walk up to it gave inspiration to the design. Arriving on a tractor road leading from the farm, you have to cross the river on the farmer’s bridge to reach the bank with the sauna. This walk from the public to the protected and the entering of a closed room where you may well sit all naked right next to a total stranger gave us the ideas for the orientation of the different parts of the structure..The only window in the sauna room, sitting up behind the bathers’ necks, provides a view of treetops and the sky. The heat source is an old wooden stove from the farm. A small annex for changing clothes and storing firewood is added as a freestanding continuation of the main form. The annex floor serves as a bench for those who are out to get fresh air or who have just come up from the cold waters of the river after a dip. Once you close the door, it becomes darker, and all you hear are the sounds from the fire in the stove and the hiss of water thrown on hot rocks..The sauna is an insulated stud wall construction in spruce. The tight economy of the project resulted in outer and inner cladding both being executed with spruce planks of rough quality. This lends a rugged feeling to the building and reminds one of the local historical timber constructions. The building rests on pad foundations so as to make as small an impact on the ground vegetation as possible..”  Interesting form, minimal style, impact, materials; contextual sensibility..
