Architecture: 2012 Serpentine Pavilion Complete by Herzog & de Meuron + Ai Weiwei: “..the 12th serpentine gallery by swiss architects herzog & de meuron and beijing-based ai weiwei is now complete. a plane of water is now floating above the lawn of the serpentine gallery in london, england, inviting visitors to pass beneath it and observe the recently exposed components of the past structures. eleven columns representing each of the previous editions elevate the roof plane 1.4 meters from the excavated ground while an additional support stands for the current construct. encouraging visitors to delve under the surface, this archeological experience transports them back in time as they lounge within the interior. cork lines the surfaces of the stepped ground plane and seating to generate a warm location for repose. during the summer, the venue will host public talks and events during ‘park nights’ until october 14, 2012..” Photos by the great Iwan Baan..Get thee to Serpentine..

Architecture: Knut Hamsun Centre by Steven Holl Architects: “..The building is conceived as an archetypal and intensified compression of spirit in space and light..The building uses the vernacular style as inspiration for reinterpretation..The stained black wood exterior skin is characteristic of the great wooden stave Norse churches. On the roof garden, bamboo refers to traditional Norwegian sod roofs in a modern way. The rough white-painted and the concrete interiors are characterized by diagonal rays of light calculated to ricochet through the section on certain days of the year..” Including excellent photos by Steven Holl Architects, Chris McVoy and Iwan Baan..

Architecture: El B – Auditorium in Cartagena by Selgascano: “..the translucent exterior of the linear volume stretches 210 meters and projects the orthogonal edges found in the man-made environment. as visitors enter the interior, a delicate and light space is presented, evoking a soft aquatic ambiance that is decidedly missing from outside the building’s walls. aluminum and plastic manufactured from a single extruded section are placed in diverse ways and tinted with pigments to appear as different elements. set parallel to the pier’s edge, the horizontality of the low-profile facade accentuates the structures length, with a roof terrace offering panoramic and unobstructed views to the sea..” Luminous, superb interior. Wonderful photos, especially of the interior spaces, by the excellent architectural photographer Iwan Baan..
